Can an Air Quality Monitor Detect Radon?

A device that measures PM2.5, CO₂ or volatile organic compounds does not automatically measure radon. Only air quality monitors equipped with a dedicated radon sensor can detect radon. Before purchasing, check the product specifications and datasheet to confirm whether the device supports radon detection. Do not assume that a device can detect radon simply because it is described as an “air quality monitor

Why the device name is not enough

Indoor air quality covers several different conditions. A monitor may focus on airborne particles, certain gases, temperature or humidity. Another model may combine several measurements in one enclosure.

“Multi-function” and “smart” describe a product broadly. Neither term confirms that radon is included. The useful question is: does the specification explicitly list a radon channel, a radon measurement range and a radon concentration unit?

Even if the device displays a green indicator, the levels of pollutants it does not measure may still be unknown. Consider the overall air quality score alongside the individual readings and the device's measurement limitations when assessing your indoor environment.↗

Radon, CO₂ and PM2.5 measure different things

Reading

What it describes

Does that reading establish the radon concentration?

Radon

Concentration of a radioactive gas

Yes, when measured with a suitable radon device and procedure

CO₂

Carbon dioxide concentration

No

PM2.5

Concentration of fine airborne particles

No

TVOC

A device-dependent indication of volatile organic compounds

No

Temperature and humidity

Thermal and moisture conditions

No

Radon is a radioactive gas, not a CO₂ value or a particle-size category. ↗ A home can therefore need several complementary measurements to answer different questions about its indoor environment.

For example, a particle monitor may help you observe cooking-related particle changes. It cannot use that particle result to tell you the home's radon concentration. Similarly, improving a CO₂ reading does not demonstrate that radon is below a local reference level.

Can a carbon monoxide alarm detect radon?

Do not assume it can. Carbon monoxide and radon are different gases, and a CO alarm should be used for its stated purpose. Only a product explicitly designed to measure both should be treated as having both functions.

Keep required smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in place. Adding a radon monitor does not replace them or change the manufacturer's alarm placement instructions.

How to check your existing monitor

Read the manual and product specification for your exact model. Look for:

1. An explicit statement that the device measures radon.

2. Radon units such as Bq/m³ or pCi/L.

3. A stated radon measurement range and performance information.

4. Instructions for placement, initial operation and averaging periods.

5. Evidence relevant to your intended use or local testing scheme.

If the documentation lists only CO₂, PM2.5, TVOC, temperature and humidity, do not use it to draw conclusions about radon. Ask the manufacturer for clarification if a listing is ambiguous.

Do you need a separate radon detector?

A dedicated detector is one practical option if your existing monitor does not measure radon. A combined device may also be suitable when its radon function is documented and appropriate for your purpose.

Do not choose only by the number of measurements on the box. Consider whether each reading is useful, whether the instructions are clear, and whether you can leave the radon device in the correct location for the required period.

Our guide to How to Choose a Radon Detector for Your Home explains the comparison criteria. You can also browse the APRVTIO Radon Detectors collection and compare the published specifications.

A radon display still needs time

Even a suitable radon monitor must be used correctly. Its initial displayed value and its longer-term average may cover different periods. Consult the manual to understand both, and follow the measurement duration recommended in your country. ↗

Frequently asked questions

Can a CO₂ monitor estimate radon?

A CO₂ reading alone cannot establish a radon concentration. Use a device that explicitly measures radon.

Is a multi-pollutant monitor enough?

Only if radon is specifically included and the device is suitable for the measurement you intend to conduct. Check the exact model rather than assuming all products in a range have the same functions.

Does good ventilation prove radon is low?

No. Building conditions may affect radon, but only a radon measurement can show the concentration during the test. ↗
